Highway 106 resurfacing starts Monday west of Fort Atkinson

Resurfacing starts Monday, July 26, on 11.8 miles of State Highway 106 West from Fort Atkinson to Albion.

The state Department of Transportation reports that the road will be closed from the State Highway 26 bypass to Park Drive in Fort Atkinson.

Also known as Sinnissippi Drive, Park Drive is the south entrance to Rock River Park in Fort Atkinson.

The posted detour will be Highway 26 to U.S. Highway 12 to Business Highway 26 (Robert Street).

DOT project manager Kevin Drunasky told FortAtkinsonOnline.com Friday that local access would be available for residents and persons traveling to Blackhawk Island Road and Veterans Lane.

“The contractor is required to maintain access for everyone, including Patten’s Marine, the farm off Riverside Drive and the other roads just east of Highway 26,” he said, adding that he would tell the contractor to “make sure all motorists get to where they need to be.”

Further west, Highway 106 will remain open to traffic with flagging operations from State Highway 73 in Dane County to Highway 26 in Jefferson County. Motorists are advised to slow down and be alert for crews and equipment near the travel lane.

The overall project will include a bridge replacement between Highway 26 and Park Drive, as well as guardrail improvements, adding centerline rumble strips and new pavement markings.

The prime contractor for the $3.95 million project is the Payne and Dolan Inc. Walbec Group, based in Waukesha.

The project is scheduled to be completed in late October, weather permitting.

Information on the resurfacing project can be found at projects.511wi.gov/wis106-wis73/.

Meanwhile, reconstruction continues on a stretch of Highway 106 East between County Highway CI and First Street in Palmyra.

Crews are replacing 4.9 miles of deteriorated pavement with 3.5 inches of asphalt pavement.

In addition, 3 feet of existing gravel shoulder will be paved, with the overall shoulder width reduced from six feet to five. Some existing culvert pipes and guardrails are being replaced.

Work also includes installation of centerline rumble strips, asphalt safety edge on the outside paved shoulders and pavement marking.

Drunasky said work will continue through about mid-August.

Further west, the Jefferson County Highway Department is continuing work resurfacing County Highway N from Highway 106 to South Street/Vogel Road in the City of Jefferson.

The road is closed to through traffic, but access is being maintained to local residences and businesses, as well as emergency vehicles.

The northbound detour utilizes Highway 106 (East Sherman Avenue), State Highway 26 and Business Highway 26 (Main Street) in Fort Atkinson.

The southbound detour uses Business Highway 26 (Main Street), State Highway 89 (Main Street) and Highway 106 (East Sherman Avenue).

The road will remain closed until approximately the end of August/early September, depending on the weather.
