Hiking the Appalachian Trail: Fort resident David Firari sends an update

Where in the world is Fort Atkinson resident David Firari? On the Appalachian Trail of course.

In February, Firari, who grew up in Fort Atkinson, told Fort Atkinson Online that he wanted to hike the full 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail. New to through-trail hiking, in 2022, he spent time researching the trail, procuring equipment, doing “shakedown hikes,” and, shortly after his interview with FAO, set off on his adventure.

Firari also shared that he has Crohn’s disease. To accomplish his hiking dream, his parents, Keith and Martha Firari, also of Fort Atkinson, will meet him at intervals along the trail and return him to Fort Atkinson for his prescribed medical treatments, then return him to the point on the trail where they picked him up.

Firari anticipates that his six-month journey, beginning in Georgia, will take him through 14 states before it concludes in Maine. Here, in video, is his first update from the Appalachian Trail.

In the video, Firari said he was just recently returned to the trail by his parents, and, with 27 days on the trail behind him, he describes his excitement about his adventure and the experiences he’s had thus far. He also shares breathtaking views from the trail of Fontana Lake in North Carolina.

An earlier story about Firari in anticipation of his adventure, is here: https://fortatkinsononline.com/fort-man-to-begin-2200-mile-hike-along-the-appalachian-trail/.
