Hoard’s Dairyman Farm Creamery, Crave Brothers bring big money for scholarships at state fair

The Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board has issued a list of prize winners and big money earners for scholarship funding during the Blue Ribbon Dairy Products Auction held Thursday at Wisconsin State Fair Park. 

According to the release, dairy manufacturers, supporters and enthusiasts gathered at the Saz’s Hospitality Pavilion at Wisconsin State Fair Park on Thursday, Aug. 12, for the Blue Ribbon Dairy Products Auction and the announcement of the 2021 Wisconsin State Fair Grand Master Cheesemaker. 

Team Emmi Roth, Monroe, won the coveted title with their winning entry of Roth Grand Cru Reserve Wheel. The entry scored 99.650 in the smear ripened cheese class. 

Additionally, the release noted, each blue ribbon entry from the dairy products contest sold during the auction, which raised $54,150 for student scholarships and dairy promotion at the state fair. Leading off the auction was 18 pounds of Team Emmi Roth’s Grand Cru Reserve Wheel, which sold for $1,800.

Among items sold, were:

• Farmers Rope String Cheese and Mascarpone, made by Brain Crave, Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese, Waterloo. The 6-pound product was purchased by DR Tech, at a per-pound price of $140, for a total price of $840.

• Belaire and Gouda made from Guernsey milk, made by Ben Workman, Hoard’s Dairyman Farm Creamery, Fort Atkinson. The product was purchased by Nelson Jameson, at a per-pound price of $75, for a total price of $1,650. 

• Chocolate Mascarpone, made by George Crave, Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese, Waterloo. The product was purchased by We Energies, at a per-pound price of $700, for a total price of $1,400.
