The Hoard Historical Museum has announced that it will be hosting a one-woman art show featuring the works of local artist Jan Gilkey.
According to information released by the museum, Gilkey will display between 60 and 70 pieces during the event which is slated to begin Saturday, Aug. 19, and run through Thursday Aug. 31.
The museum is located at 401 Whitewater Ave., Fort Atkinson; the show is free and open to the public.
Visitors to the exhibit will find a body of work spanning 20 years, and produced using such mediums as watercolors, pastels and oils, among others.
The show will open with an informal reception, planned between 1 and 3 p.m., during which time event-goers will have an opportunity to meet the artist. The show will remain available for viewing during the museum’s regular hours: Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
As stated in the release, Gilkey’s works have been displayed in “numerous other art shows,” and have previously been placed on display at the Hoard Museum.
As noted in the release, Gilkey stated that she has been considering exhibiting her works as a one-woman show “for some time.”
“The bulk of her pieces in the show will be in the representational style or artwork that clearly depicts actual items,” the release noted, adding that Gilkey has stated that she prefers painting in the representational style.
“I paint what I feel I know, particularly animals and water, because when I’ve painted something I love, I want it to be there in the final work. My work is personal. I don’t use projectors to project an image on canvas, I do free-hand drawings from my own photographs because I think the concentration that is required to draw the shapes allows me to paint the forms decisively. Using my own photographs recalls experiences which I try to translate into the mood of the painting,” Gilkey was quoted as saying in the release.
Select pieces on display also will be offered to the public for sale, and a portion of those funds are being returned by the artist to the museum in the form of a donation, the release stated.
