Jefferson man pronounced dead in Iowa County following snowmobile crash

A Jefferson man was pronounced dead Thursday in Iowa County after losing control of a snowmobile he was operating, according to information released by the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office.

Richard Koch, 67, was operating a snowmobile on the Military Ridge State Trail between County Trunk BB and County Trunk YZ when he lost control of the machine.

The Iowa County 911 center received a call about a snowmobile crash at approximately 10:39 a.m., the release stated, further noting that emergency units were dispatched to the scene.

“Even though life saving efforts were made by law enforcement and EMS personnel,” the release noted, Koch was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the release, a preliminary investigation showed that Koch was traveling eastbound on the Military Ridge State Trail when he lost control of the snowmobile. Koch was ejected from the machine, suffering serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the release stated.

Along with the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office, several agencies responded to the scene, including Ridgeway Fire/First Response, Dodgeville EMS, UW Med Flight, the Iowa County Coroner’s Office and the DNR.
