Sen. Steve Nass (R-Whitewater) issued the following statement Tuesday in response to the start of the 2023-2025 biennial budget process as Gov. (Tony) Evers and big spending legislators breathlessly announce ways to fleece the taxpayers of the nearly $7 billion surplus.
“In recent days, Gov. Evers and financially challenged legislators have been making it snow money in the State Capitol with an endless list of spending gifts for special interests and bigger government advocates. I would not be shocked if Gov. Evers gives his biennial budget address on Wednesday night dressed as Santa Claus.
“As the inflation crisis continues for Wisconsin families and job losses start to mount as a potential recession nears, the disconnected mood in the State Capitol is one of joy and glee as elected officials excitedly roll around in nearly $7 billion dollars inappropriately taken from Wisconsin taxpayers.
“While I am certain that the Republican legislature will eventually set aside Evers’ 2023-2025 biennial budget proposal, there is still a danger that even the majority party in crafting its own two-year spending plan may be blinded by the piles of one-time cash.
“As I have done previously in determining my vote on biennial budget bills, it matters nothing to me who drafted the document. If it’s bad for taxpayers then I will oppose it vigorously.”
