National Coming Out Day will be celebrated with a gathering Saturday, Oct. 16, on Fort Atkinson’s Main Street bridge.
Organized by the Unity Project of Fort Atkinson, the event will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
“This is a short, but very sweet, activity to show our support to the LGBTQ+ community who have just come out, those who have been out, and those who are still struggling with coming out,” said Unity Project President Laura Alwin.
“The weather looks good, so please join us in making sure that every community member feels equally welcomed in Fort,” she added.
A poster-making session is slated for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at the Dwight Foster Public Library. Persons planning to attend should contact Alwin at laura.unityproject@gmail.com.
This marks the 33rd anniversary of National Coming Out Day. It formally is observed Oct. 11, the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights.
The idea behind the observance, first held in 1988, is that when people know someone who is LGBTQ+, they are far more likely to support equality under the law. Beyond that, the LGBTQ+ community’s stories can provide powerful support.
The Unity Project of Fort Atkinson’s mission is to promote “a sense of acceptance, and belonging, among all members of our community.”
