Easter 2020 came just weeks after gathering places were shuttered and residents were sent home in hopes of curbing the coronavirus’ spread.
No new Easter bonnets and frilly dresses.
No fragrant Easter lilies and daffodils decorating church altars.
No choruses of “Christ the Lord Has Risen Today.”
Well, at least not in person.
Easter worship did go on, of course, via livestreaming, YouTube, radio broadcasts, videoconferencing and other social media. In the next 12 months, ministers would become quite tech-savvy in finding ways to shepherd their flocks sans staff.
Now it is March 2021 and we’re still in a pandemic. But with half of our state’s eligible senior citizens being vaccinated and shots opening up to everyone over age 16, there is a dim light at the end of the tunnel. And if we all continue to mask up and take precautions, it will brighten by the day.
It is with that outlook that we celebrate Easter. Whether socially distanced in the pews or sitting back in a favorite recliner this Sunday, Christians still will be thinking about the same thing: How Mary Magdalene, Salome and Mary, the mother of James, went to anoint Jesus’ body at sunrise, only to find the boulder rolled away, tomb empty and an angel announcing Jesus’ resurrection.
Like the chicks pecking through their shells and daffodils pushing up through the soil, we, too, are experiencing a rebirth. Little by little, we soon will be emerging from our long hibernation with a fresh outlook on life, hope for the future … and many blessings to count.
Happy Easter!
