A new event, called “Recovery by the River” is planned for Saturday, Sept. 17, at Riverfront Park, Jefferson.
The event is sponsored by the Jefferson County Drug Free Coalition (JCDFC) in partnership with Safe Communities MDC and the Jefferson County Human Services Department and will offer Jefferson County’s recovery community more opportunities to engage in substance-free festivities, according to a news release.
The event will be held between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Riverfront Park South Shelter, 629 S. Wisconsin Dr., Jefferson.
The event is free and food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided, the release stated.
Along with free food and drinks, the event will feature a bags tournament and other activities. Those identifying as being in recovery, supportive of those in recovery or interested in learning more about recovery programs and issues in the Jefferson County area are encouraged to participate.
According to the release, “The need for resources for long-term recovery is a growing one. Jefferson County saw 15 opioid-related deaths in 2020, with deaths across the state rising 46.2% from 2018 to 2020, according to data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
“Finding connection and community can be an important part in finding long-term recovery from any substance use-disorder. Local events however are frequently associated with substance use — such as alcohol — which can make substance-free alternatives difficult to find. With Recovery by the River and events like it, JCDFC and its partners hope to bring more chances for recovery-focused opportunities for community members in Jefferson County.”

May I suggest a different name for this group? I’m afraid when I saw the headlines “Recovery by the River” sounded like an unknown body had washed up by Riverfront Park? Maybe for next year it can be identified differently? Just a thought based on not knowing what you were trying to accomplish?
