Regional art program winners named; move to state-level competition

The Whitewater Arts Alliance has announced the selection of winners within the Wisconsin Regional Art Program exhibition, or WRAP, which is hosted by the alliance and on display within its gallery at the Cultural Arts Center, 402 W. Main St., Whitewater.

Works selected for recognition as winners during the show will next compete in a state-level exhibition in Madison.

Several pieces also were selected to receive honorable mention.

Selections were made during a reception held Friday as part of the regional exhibition.

Some 20 event-goers, including artists and members of the public, participated in the reception.

Winners were selected by award-winning artist and Milton resident, Larry Schultz,  who served as judge.

According to information released by the arts alliance, the show features the work of nonprofessional artists in Wisconsin.

This year, some 13 artists displayed more than 30 pieces.

A variety of mediums were represented in the show, including those of sculpture, acrylic, oil, and collage.

As stated within the release, submitted works were judged on such criteria as: originality, expression, content, composition, design, color, and technique.

Works selected for honorable mention excelled in most of the aforementioned criteria, but exhibited room for improvement in at least one area.

Works selected to advance to the statewide competition exhibited a level of excellence in all of the aforementioned criteria, the release noted.

During Friday’s reception, works created by four artists, including Mary Bughman, Whitewater; Judith Buzzell, Delavan; Sue Herring, Milton, and Roy Schmidt, Waterford, were selected to advance to the program’s state-level competition.

In addition, works created by four artists, including Silvia Cavagnero, Madison; Megan Forsythe, Stoughton; Jeff Mann, Wales, and Laura Strehlow, Cambridge, were selected for honorable mention.

Works selected as state award winners will be placed on display in the Pyle Center, Madison, as part of the State Exhibition and Conference sponsored by the Association of Wisconsin Artists (AWA). The exhibition and conference will be held Sept. 22-23.
