Respiratory illness season is here. What can you do to combat flu, RSV, pertussis, COVID-19?

Editor’s note: the following information has been released for publication by the Jefferson County Health Department.

As the fall season begins, it is typical to see an increase in respiratory illnesses, such as flu, RSV, pertussis, and COVID-19. Jefferson County Health Department encourages individuals to take actions to protect yourself and your loved ones. Each prevention tool you use adds to your overall protection.

Whether or not you are considered high-risk, you can use strategies and tools to lower your chances of catching or spreading a respiratory virus. Those tools include hand-washing/cleaning, staying home if you are feeling ill, avoiding touching your face with unwashed hands, covering your coughs/sneezes, and getting vaccinated. A combination of all these tools is best practice to keep yourself and your family, friends, and other loved ones healthy this respiratory illness season.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), along with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), encourages everyone to start now, make a plan and prepare for a healthier fall and winter. Vaccines that combat flu, RSV, pertussis, and COVID-19 are currently available throughout the state of Wisconsin, including Jefferson County. Individuals are encouraged to reach out to their healthcare provider to discuss if these vaccines are right for them, especially if you are considered high-risk. If you get sick, contact your healthcare provider. Knowing which virus you have helps determine treatment options and lowers the risk of spreading the virus.

Most insurance plans cover the cost of vaccinations. Additionally, the Jefferson County Health Department offers vaccinations to those who are uninsured and to those whose health insurance plan does not cover it.

In addition to offering vaccination services at the Jefferson County Health Department’s clinic, the health department is offering influenza and Tdap vaccines free of charge to age eligible children at the below community sites:

• Monday, Oct. 14, Palmyra-Eagle High School Community Center, 123 Burr Oak St., Palmyra,  between 4 and 6 p.m.

• Wednesday, Oct. 16, Jefferson West Elementary Cafeteria,
900 West Milwaukee St., Jefferson, between 3 and 6 p.m.
