Rome to hold Monday Memorial Day observance

The 134th consecutive Memorial Day Observance in Rome will be held on Monday, according to information released by event organizers.

Rome is an unincorporated community in the town of Sullivan.

The observance will begin at 9 a.m. in the “Rome Community Center,” a recent press release stated.

This year’s observance speaker is Scott Luebke, who joined the Army National Guard in June of 2003 and, while serving, achieved the rank of sergeant E-5.

According to the release, Luebke was deployed to Southern Iraq/Northern Kuwait, serving 15 months from 2005 to 2006.

In 2008, the release continued, the 32nd Brigade restructured for deployment readiness and the Fort Atkinson unit was reclassed to a calvary unit, and became A Troop 1-105th CAV Reconnaissance Scout.

Luebke was deployed to Bagdad, Iraq, in 2009 and 2010.  In 2011, he completed his service with the National Guard.

Additionally, the observance will include a children’s decorated bicycle contest. Participants must be at the Rome Community Center by 8:30 a.m. for judging.

Prizes will be awarded, the release continued.

Following the program at the community center, the Jefferson Middle School Band will provide music during a “march to the bridge for the laying of (a) wreath” in the Bark River, in honor of those lost at sea.

The march will continue to the Hoffman Cemetery where members of American Legion Post 513 will conduct a service to honor all veterans.

In addition, the historical society will provide lunch available for purchase.

“Many desserts along with barbecues and hot dogs will be available until 1 p.m,” the release stated.

Further, the Town of Rome-Sullivan Historical Society will have open house at the Rome School Museum and the former E.U.B. church from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

“The four large rooms of the schoolhouse are filled with historical displays and artifacts from the area.  The church has an extensive, impressive display of wedding dresses and other wedding artifacts,” according to the release.
