Rome to host 133rd Memorial Day observance

Rome, Jefferson County, has announced that it will be hosting its 133rd Memorial Day observance Monday May 29.  

According to information released by observance organizers, the event will begin at 9 a.m. in the town’s Community Center, 408 Grove St.

With Don Hoffman serving as master of ceremonies, the observance will include an address, given by U.S. Army Specialist Paul Thomas, the release noted, adding that Thomas’  military occupation specialty in the Military Police, 95 Bravo, served as an excellent foundation for his civilian police career. Thomas served in Germany,  prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall.  He was assigned to the 527th MP Company of the 709th MP Battalion of the 18th MP Brigade, the release stated. 

In addition, children are invited to enter their bicycles into a decorating contest. Those interested in participating must bring their bikes to the Community Center by 8:30 a.m. when judging will take place, the release stated. 

Prizes will be awarded. 

Music during the event will be supplied by the Jefferson Middle School Band, and the band will participate in the “march to the bridge for the laying of the wreath in the Bark River to honor those lost at sea,” according to the release.  The march will continue to the Hoffman Cemetery on Water Street where American Legion Post No. 513 will conduct a service to honor all veterans of all wars, the release noted.   

The Town of Sullivan Historical Society, located in Rome, will host an open house at the Rome Grade School Museum and at the former E.U.B. Church, also located in Rome, from 10 a.m. to 1  p.m. 

“The four large rooms of the schoolhouse are filled with historical displays and artifacts from the area. The church has an extensive display of wedding dresses and other wedding artifacts,” the release continued. 

The historical society will offer for purchase such treats as barbecue, hot dogs, and homemade pie and dessert at the Community Center until 1 p.m., the release stated.
