Scouts food drive underway

Members of local Boy Scout troops will be collecting donations for the Fort Atkinson Food Pantry on Saturday.

According to information released by the scouts, as part of the nationwide Scouting for Food program, Fort Atkinson residents are asked to fill a bag with non-perishable food items and set it out by their front door by 9 a.m. Saturday.

The scouts will pick up the bag and take it to the food pantry.

Last weekend, scouts canvassed Fort Atkinson, hanging door tags announcing the food pantry collection on as many front doors as tags were available.

However, one need not have received a door tag to participate, according to the release.

“Our Fort Food Pantry is amazing and the need is great in our community. Please consider putting a few items from your cupboard or pick up a few extra things on your grocery trip this week,” Rachel Broadhead a representative from the group, said.

The release stated: If the bag of food is not picked up by 1 p.m. on Saturday, contact fapack137@yahoo.com.

Among the nonperishable food items the pantry needs are pancake mix, pancake syrup, canned chicken, peanut butter, canned fruit, baked beans, and vegetable beef soup. However, all items are greatly appreciated, the release continued.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 131 and Cub Scout Pack 137, both of Fort Atkinson, are heading up the local food drive, which is sponsored by Jones Dairy Farm and the Boy Scouts of America Glacier’s Edge Council.

Annually, the nearly 6,000 local scouts and leaders pick up 100,000 pounds of food that benefit more than 35 community food pantries and the Second Harvest Foodbank.
