Shirley Mae Gebhardt, 90, of Fort Atkinson passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 surrounded by her family at her home.
Shirley was born on January 20, 1934 in Fort Atkinson to Arthur and Bernice (Brink) Patefield. She graduated from Fort Atkinson High School. On October 29, 1955, Shirley married Gary B. Gebhardt and together they had two children. Shirley was very involved with her children’s activities, acting as a Sunday school teacher and girl scout leader. Shirley kept the books for Gary Gebhardt Plumbing and then began working as a fitness consultant at age 73 in 2003 at Curves.
Shirley was a coordinator for American Red Cross for 25 years, volunteered at Fort hospital for many years and served her community as an election poll worker. Shirley was a member of Friedens UCC and most recently Grace United Church. She was very involved with her church and the ministry of the food pantry. She also served as president of the Women’s Guild at Friedens Church and was a member of Eastern Star.
She enjoyed cooking/baking and is well known for her cut out sugar cookies at Christmas which she shared. Shirley loved people, had a remarkable memory, and focused conversations on others. Anyone was always welcomed into her home. She had a special place in her heart for animals, most recently precious Hannah. She could hold her own in conversations regarding football and golf as well as current events. She always had time for family/friends and was known for her kindness, positive attitude, and helpful suggestions.
Shirley is survived by her children, Kathi (Linda Anderson) Gebhardt of Fort Atkinson, Keith (Jane) Gebhardt of South Carolina; grandchildren, Wendy (Dave Johnston) of Kansas, Haley (Zach) Bottiger of Fort Atkinson, Elizabeth “Betsy” Gebhardt of South Carolina; great-grandchildren, Hunter, David Leo, Alaina, Pearson, Colton, Sullivan; sister, Helen (Charles) Sayre; sister-in-law, Shari Bienfang; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Bernice Patefield; husband, Gary Gebhardt spouse; In-laws Pearson and Ruth Gebhardt; siblings, Russell Patefield, Douglas Patefield, Gerome Patefield, and Beverly Roehl; Brother-in-law and sister-in-law Charles and Nancy Hoefs; brother-in-law Gordon Roehl; and sister-in-law Joyce Patefield.
A memorial service and celebration of life reception will take place at Grace United Church in Fort Atkinson on Saturday, March 9, 2024. Visitation prior to the service at 9:30 AM with service at 10:30 AM, and open house reception following the service until 2 pm. Family and friends that wish to attend should feel comfortable attending any portion of the arrangements.
