St. Joseph School eighth-grade Washington D.C. trip fundraiser slated

By Kim McDarison

A fundraising event to help support the cost of an eighth-grade field trip to Washington D.C. will be held Saturday, Feb. 11, according to information released by St. Joseph School officials.

The event will be held at Rock River Lanes, 1010 Larson Rd., Fort Atkinson, from noon until 5 p.m.

Fifty percent of proceeds earned during the fundraising event by the bowling company will be donated to the school to help fund the eighth-grade trip.

According to information shared by event organizers, some 18 students have signed up to participate in the six-day trip, with students leaving by bus on Sunday, April 30, and returning Friday, May 5.

According to social studies and religion teacher Kristi Rodenbeck, the trip will be the first of its kind in which St. Joseph students will be participating.

St. Joseph students were invited to join with seven other Catholic schools within the Madison Diocese, she said.

For the other schools, the trip is an annual event, she noted.

“They invited us along and we accepted the invitation. We are excited to take the SJS students for the first time,” she added

“The purpose of this trip is to learn about the nation’s history and to see some of the places that we have been learning about in our history classes while collaborating and connecting with our sister schools,” Rodenbeck stated.

While in Washington D.C., students will visit the United States Capitol Rotunda, the U.S. House and Senate chambers, the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery and Smithsonian Museums.

A per student cost for the trip is $1,739, parent volunteer and trip fundraising coordinator Amy Root said.

Along with learning about the nation’s history, Root said students will see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and visit the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame and the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial.

Additionally, she said, students will experience traveling a long distance on a coach bus and staying in a hotel with their classmates.

According to Root, those attending the fundraising event will find a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and bake sale, all of which will provide additional avenues through which to support the upcoming trip.

Donations also can be delivered directly to the office at St. Joseph School, 1650 Endl Blvd., Fort Atkinson, by Friday, Feb. 3.
