Veterans, families honored during Purdy Elementary School Veterans Day tribute

Purdy Elementary School students and staff Friday participated in a tribute honoring veterans and their families.

During the event, which was held on Veterans Day, 20 veterans and their families were received at the school.

Several area veterans groups, including the American Legion Post 166, VFW 1879 and Blackhawk Chapter Vietnam Veteran American 409 helped plan the event, according to information released by Purdy Elementary School Principal Mary Kilar.

According to the release, Kilar addressed those assembled during the tribute, saying: “Extraordinary acts by ordinary people, calls to sacrifice, calls to action, calls to serve —  brave men and women answered these calls to defend the freedom of their fellow people.

“This is what our veterans do for all of us. We have freedoms because these brave men and women answered the call, and we honor you today.”

During the tribute, fourth-grade students presented those assembled with some history about Veterans Day, and fifth-grade students led the group in song, along with presenting a tribute sharing photographs of veterans who have connections with Purdy Elementary School.

Additionally, Fort Atkinson High School students Lorena Ramirez and Ashlyn Wadsworth were on hand to play Taps, followed by a moment of silence in honor of the fallen, the release noted.

The tribute concluded with handmade cards given to each veteran in attendance, accompanied with a military salute, the release stated.
