Whitewater: League of Women Voters virtual book club to discuss Central America, immigration policies

The League of Women Voters-Whitewater Area has announced that it will be facilitating a virtual book club focusing on the history of Central America and its relationship to immigration policies within the United States.

According to a news release, the league has selected as its study book: “Central America’s Forgotten History: Revolution, Violence, and the Roots of Migration,” by Aviva Chomsky, a professor of history and coordinator of Latin American studies at Salem State University, Salem, Mass. The book was published in 2022.

Within his book, Chomsky focuses on the struggles for social and economic justice in Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras by tracing the roots of displacement and migration from the Spanish conquest to the present day influx of refugees seeking asylum, looking to answer the question: “How did we get here?” the release stated.

Book club sessions will be held Thursdays, beginning with “Part I – A Crisis with Deep Roots,” which will be held Feb. 23, followed by “Part II – Revolution in the 1970’s and ’80’s,” to be held March 30, and “Part III – Killing Hope,” to be held April 27.

Made available through Zoom, the first session will be led by Dr. Dwight Watson and Deb Gamble. Books will be made available at Young Memorial Library and can be ordered through The Book Teller, 171 W. Main St., Whitewater, or ordered online through Amazon or Kindle, the release stated.

Those interested in registering to attend the Zoom sessions or looking for further information may contact Deb Gamble by email: shebagam@gmail.com.

All members of the public are welcome.
