City of Whitewater officials have announced that the Department of Public Works will be delivering sand to residents on Monday, Dec. 5.
According to a news release, the sand is being distributed for use over the winter months on public sidewalks.
Those interested in receiving sand are asked to place a “sturdy container” at the curb near their home by 7 a.m.
“City officials stress that a cardboard box is not considered a sturdy container,” the release stated.
In the event of a snowstorm or other unforeseen occurrence preventing sand deliveries, they will be made “as soon as weather permits,” the release noted.
According to the release, city ordinances provide that owners, occupants and persons in charge of any building or lot with city sidewalk frontage are required to remove all snow and ice from their portion of the sidewalk no later than 24 hours after a snow or ice event.
In the event that ice has formed on a sidewalk that proves difficult to remove, owners and residents are responsible for sprinkling salt or sand on the affected area, the release stated.
