The Whitewater Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that it will be hosting a Whitewater Storytelling Festival Oct. 15-16.
According to information released by the chamber, the event is a “celebration of the art of storytelling,” bringing locally, regionally, and nationally known storytellers to Whitewater. The collaborative event will harness the talents, skills, and resources of multiple organizations and individuals in the Whitewater community, the release noted.
The festival will kick off Friday, Oct. 15, with “Campfire Stories,” slated to take place between 5 and 9 p.m. Event-goers will find cocoa and S’mores for sale at the fire pit in Cravath Lakefront Park. Participants are encouraged to come to the campfire and “try their hand at being a storyteller,” by spinning a tale or two, according to the release.
On Saturday, Oct. 16, the festival continues with a full day of storytelling performances presented on the main stage at the Cravath Lakefront Park Frawley Amphitheater and in the children’s Story Zone tent. In addition to listening to the storytellers, visitors will find a variety of activities, including workshops for budding writers; a leisurely and family-friends story stroll; multiple art exhibits; a Community Oral History gathering project, hosted by the Irvin L Young Library; a Community Storybook Project at Studio 84, and a Local Authors Fair and Readings, hosted by The Book Teller, the release continued.
A stop at the Creativity Zone tent is recommended for children, where they will find crafts and activities sponsored by the Whitewater Parks and Recreation Department, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Roberta’s Art Gallery, and the Ice Age Trail Alliance.
A “special creative activity,” led by a storyteller, is planned in the Creative Zone tent between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
Evening storytelling performances are scheduled to take place at the Cultural Arts Center from 7 to 9 p.m. An Open-Mic Night will be held at The Book Teller, a retailer located in the city’s downtown.
Sponsors of the storytelling festival include: “Novel Sponsors,” Generac and storytelling patrons Rosa Spellman & family; “Chapter Sponsor,” Lavelle Industries, and “Bookmark Sponsor,” Fort Community Credit Union.
