Your Take: Fort’s recent alcohol consumption ordinances encourage a safer community

The Fort Atkinson City Council recently considered changes that would prohibit:

· People from leaving a bar or restaurant with an open container of alcohol

· Open containers of alcohol on city streets; and

· Alcohol use in parks when they are closed  (two parks prohibit alcohol use at all times and this would remain unchanged).

These are important changes that positively impact the quality of life of residents and visitors and make the community safer. With more bars and restaurants having outdoor seating, it is important that people not walk away with open containers of alcohol which can lead to other problems, such as drinking and driving. Prohibiting open containers of alcohol on city streets can also impact public safety. This can prevent public intoxication, drinking and driving, and other issues related to alcohol misuse.

Prohibiting alcohol use in city parks when they are closed is also a step in the right direction. One way to expand on this is to prohibit alcohol use in city parks that are heavily used by youth and families for recreational activities. Alcohol-free parks are not only family friendly, but can be welcoming to those in recovery. Thank you, City of Fort Atkinson City Council for taking these steps to keep the community safe.
