With very little discussion, the School District of Fort Atkinson Board of Education on Monday approved the lifting of its mask mandate effective Dec. 17.
The new protocol of optional masking will be in effect for all school groups within all of the school district’s properties after Dec. 17.
School Superintendent Rob Abbott reminded board members that mask requirements affecting students while riding school buses have been set at the federal level, and therefore remain beyond a school board’s ability to change.
For this reason, language stating that the removal of the mask mandate is for all groups while on and within school district properties was included in the board’s resolution, Abbott said.
The decision to allow the mask mandate to expire was made during a special meeting that began at 5:30 p.m. School board members voted unanimously to allow the mandate to expire. The special meeting ended at approximately 5:45.
During the brief discussion period, board members agreed they had done their due diligence to provide a safe environment for students and staff, including the most vulnerable students within the district. The ability that parents now have to vaccinate their school-aged children was a factor in that determination, they said.
