Fort Atkinson city officials have announced that a snow emergency will go into effect Saturday, at noon, and remain in effect until Sunday, at noon.
During a snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from public streets and alleys, according to the city’s announcement.
Residents may park in municipal lots with the exclusion of the lot directly behind the Fort Atkinson Municipal Building. Parking lot signs are posted within lots where residents can find specific rules about parking during snow events, the announcement stated.
According to the announcement, the Fort Atkinson Department of Public Works is monitoring the forecast, which has predicted chilly temperatures, wind, and snow accumulations in the four- to six-inch range.
Public Works crews will work throughout the day tomorrow to maintain the collector and arterial streets, areas in and around emergency services, and the hospital to help maintain traffic flow, but many residential areas will remain snow covered and slippery until the snowfall subsides, the release stated.
Additionally, city officials have asked travelers to exercise caution and care when driving during these types of winter events.
The department will plan an “all-city snow plow” in the early morning hours of Sunday. Crews will return in the early morning hours of Monday, Jan. 30, to clean up and remove the snow from the downtown and business corridor, with anticipation of removing snow before school starts and the rush of morning traffic begins. City cull-de-sac locations may have snow remaining to be picked up Tuesday, Jan. 31, or later in the week, the release stated.
A snow emergency is enacted within the city when accumulations of snowfall within a 24-hour period are greater than two inches.
Additionally, the Fort Atkinson Airport runway will be closed throughout the duration of the snow event, the announcement stated.
