Cindy Smith named April Rotary Teacher of the Month

The School District of Fort Atkinson has announced that Cindy Smith has been named April Rotary Teacher of the Month.

According to information released by the district on Monday, Smith is a science, social studies and STEM teacher at the Fort Atkinson Middle School.

She was presented with the honor on Monday.

Fort Atkinson Middle School Principal Matt Wolf, addressing members of the Rotary Club of Fort Atkinson, said Smith “embodies the very essence of excellence in education.”

Wolf said that the journey taken by Smith “has been marked by a steadfast commitment to her students, an unwavering dedication to her craft, and an insatiable passion for fostering an inquiry-based learning environment.”

He said the opportunity to speak about Smith at the rotary club gathering offered him an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the teacher’s exceptional work and applaud her accomplishments.

For the past decade, Cindy has been an integral part of our school community, touching the lives of countless students through her dynamic teaching methods and genuine care. Her versatility as an educator is truly remarkable, having taught a range of subjects including Science, Social Studies, and STEM courses. Beyond the classroom, Cindy has championed initiatives such as the robotics club, enriching the educational experience of our students beyond traditional boundaries,” Wolf said.

Wolf said that Smith, before joining the Fort Atkinson team, spent seven years teaching in Burlington, where, he noted, “she honed her craft using a project-based learning model. Her passion for inquiry-based learning has not only influenced her teaching but has also led her to collaborate with businesses and authors, presenting her insights at national forums such as the National Council of Teachers of English.”

Additionally, he lauded her “professional expertise” and “profound empathy and genuine concern for each student’s wellbeing.”

Of Smith, Wolf said: “She understands that education extends far beyond textbooks and classrooms, emphasizing the importance of building positive relationships with students and their families.”

Wolf also talked about the teacher’s involvement with community organizations and volunteerism, where, he said, she inspired her students to excel in academics and “their personal passions and interests.”

Wolf concluded by saying of Smith: “She embodies the values of Rotary Club of Fort Atkinson, demonstrating a commitment to service above self and a belief in the transformative power of education.”
