The Hoard Historical Museum, Fort Atkinson, has announced the names of the winners of several contests held last month.
“Dairy Day at the MOOseum,” an annual event which, in 2023, is in its ninth year, is designed to bring the community closer to its dairy farming history. The event was held at the museum in June.
During the event, several contests were held.
Among exhibits at the dairy day event was a tent in which seven breeds of cows, traditionally used within dairy production, were represented. Animals from two area dairy farming families — the Lundy family of Jefferson and the Fink family of Fort Atkinson — were made available to event-goers for viewing and petting.
Also on display inside the tent was a young Jersey calf, who was then unnamed.
The calf was born May 24, according to members of the Fink family, who own the young bovine.
A naming contest was held during the event.
According to information recently released by the museum, a contest participant, identified only as “Lucille,” from Fort Atkinson, submitted the winning name of “Sweetie.”
“The name for the calf was randomly picked from a container of submitted entries,” the release stated.
According to the release, the naming contest attracted some 100 submittals, with more than half entered by residents of Fort Atkinson.
Included among names submitted, but not chosen, were those of “Little Moo,” “Cinnamon,” “Cowy Cowy,” “Moolata,” “Buttercup,” “Lainey,” “Penelope,” “Pickle,” “Lady, Mookie,” “Moo Cow,” “Big Cow,” “Biscuit,” “Brown Beauty,” “Chocolate,” “Pikachu,” “Good Girl,” “Bumblebee” and “Zoey.”
Names submitted by several contest participants included: “Brownie,” “Lucy,” and “Butterscotch,” according to the release.
Also announced were winners of the museum’s cow cutout decorating contest. Winners were chosen in four categories, including those of “Youth Individual,” and “Youth Group,” and “Adult Individual” and “Adult Group.”
Contestants within youth categories decorated a calf cutout while contestants within adult categories decorated a cow cutout.
According to the release, the winners within the Youth Individual category are: Shauna Ebbert, first place, calf cutout named “Sunny”; Nora Ebbert, second place, calf cutout named “Purble,” and Gavin Menthey, third place, calf cutout named “Paul.”
The Iroquois Court Kids group was named the winner within the Youth Group category. The group submitted a calf cutout named “Daisy.”
Winners within the Adult Individual category are: Emily Bartosch, first place, cow cutout named “Millie Tank,” and Anna Morris, second place, cow cutout named “Annabelle.”
Winners within the Adult Group category include Reena Senior Living, first place, cow cutout named “Pasture Bed Time,” and St. Coletta clients/Duck Creek 4-H youth, second place, cow cutout named “Belle.”
Jenny Koch, with a cutout entry named “Daisy” received the “Popular Choice” award.
Popular Choice votes for cow cutouts were cast when event-goers placed pennies in jars corresponding to each cutout. Each penny was worth one vote.
